Summary

Grade II listed remains of churchyard cross, comprising three steps and a socket stone, surmounted by a later shaft which formerly held a sundial. It is also a Scheduled Monument. The base of the cross is dated to around 1298 or later. The 18th century sundial (now removed) was on a limestone pillar set into the base. Standing Crosses are usually of stone and date from the medieval period, mid 10th to mid 16th centuries AD. They served a variety of purposes from places of prayer and pilgrimage to sites of public proclamation. At one time there were over 12,000 of these crosses throughout Britain but many were destroyed during the reformation. There are now less than 2000 crosses remaining, many incomplete.

Full Description

Remains of churchyard cross, comprising three steps and a socket stone, surmounted by a later shaft which formerly held a sundial (1). Base of medieval cross c.1298 or later. Of red sandstone consisting of 2 step base with added bevelled block sunk for and holding a short Tuscan column, the top of which has fixings for a sundial (2). Stepped base for standing cross. 3 steps & a base block of red sandstone, into which a fine limestone pillarwith a sundial has been inserted in the 18th C. Base block and steps were originally for a churchyard cross & are medieval. 1st step is a stone foundation, now level with turf, c.2.4m sq. 2nd step is 1,97m sq & 0.24m high. 3rd step is 1.4m sq & 0.24m high. Base block is 0.93m sq & 0.38m high with chamfered top & a socle 0.33m sq. Pillar is set into this with lead & is 1.22m high & has been damaged at the top. Sundial has been removed (3).
