Full Description
<1> CBA, 2002, Defence of Britain Project, S0000213 (Digital Archive). SCH4380.
Two rows of three concrete blocks set into bridge with earthenware drain pipe sections to receive verticle poles/posts. Bridge on the Shropshire Union Canal, Hack Green, on east side of bridge.
<2> Cheshire Historic Environment Record, Various, Historic Environment Record Site Visit Record, ECH5626 - Edwards R, 17/07/2013 (Unpublished Document). SCH5294.
The concrete anchor points to the road block were removed during repair works to the bridge structure. The blocks were 0.8m tall and 0.6m x 06m square, widening at the upper end via an irregular flange to c.0.68m square. Located centrally in the upper surface was a flanged ceramic pipe, 0.34m at its widest aperture and 0.23m at its narrowest. Presumably the pipe would accommodate the posts or rails used to construct the road block. In total there were six anchor points, three at either end of the bridge’s road bed. The anchors points were reinstated.
