Please read our .

Summary

A sandstone head (possibly crowned) can be seen placed on a shelf on the external chimney breast of one of the Church Cottages in Goostrey. Allegedly, it is associated with a legend of keeping the devil away as it faces Goostrey church. It is most probably Medieval in date. It is possibly a corbel and is painted white with its features highlighted in black. It belongs to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed 'Celtic', but which show continuity into the Post Medieval period.
