Full Description
<1> Various, Written Communication to the HER, Petch M, 1991 (Written Communication). SCH3756.
A sandstone head (possibly crowned) placed on a shelf of the external chimney breast of one of the Church Cottages in Goostrey. Now in private possession. Allegedly associated with a legend of keeping the devil away as it faces Goostrey Church. Probably medieval in date, but it is unlikely that it has come from Goostrey Church. It is possibly a corbel and is painted white with its features highlighted in black. It belongs to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed 'Celtic', but which show continuity into the Post Medieval period.
