Please read our .

Summary

Set into the doorways of a barn are two carved stone “Celtic” style heads. It is possible that these carvings have been reused from another structure or building. The carvings are either decorative or were intended to afford some form of protection. These carvings belong to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed “Celtic” and which date from the Iron Age to the Post Medieval period.

Full Description

<1> Manchester Museum, 1986-1991, Correspondence from the Manchester Museum about Stone Heads in Cheshire (Written Communication). SCH9081.

Located in the wall of a barn, attached to a seventeenth century farmhouse in Kelsall, there are four stone carved heads. The “Celtic” style heads are carved into rectangular building stones and are set in the two doorways to the barn. They are obscured by many layers of whitewash and are well worn. It is more likely that they are original features than added to the barn at a later date. An apotropaic (protective) function is implied. They belong to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed “Celtic”, but which show continuity into the Post Medieval period.
