Summary

Large stones and traces of fire and bones were ploughed up here in the 1940's. The site was later archaeologically excavated revealing a circle of stones surrounded by a ditch. To one side of the circle the cremated bones of a child were found as a secondary burial in an inverted Middle Bronze Age urn. There was no mound on the site which was used as a market garden.

Full Description

In 1947, Mr Morrey of Morrey's Nurseries, Kelsall, ploughed up large stones later thought to have been the cist of a tumulus and traces of fire and bones. G Webster excavated the site in 1951. A circle of stones 10' in diameter was found at a depth of 14". Outside this was a ditch. The cremated bones of a child were found as a secondary burial in an inverted MBA urn, 4' deep at the side the of the circle. There was no mound on the site, which had been cultivated for a long time (1). Site destroyed by market garden (3). Excavation by GB leach in 1950. Urn and possible cist.
