Full Description
A small nucleated settlement, which developed in response to the industrial demands of the C19th. The early nucleus of the village is centred around the mill (Poole Bank Mill CHER 2887/33), which no longer exists. Burdett’s map of 1777 shows a small mill wheel on the brook, later references confirm the spread of industrial enterprises into the countryside surrounding Congleton, including a mill at Timbersbrook. The growth of the canal system provided an easier and cheaper means of transporting building materials and two stone quarries and gravel pits were operating in the village. The village is now residential in character and is an interesting example of a C19th industrial settlement. Any archaeological potential is probably limited to the area around the old mill site. (1)
