Later house designed in 1778 by Samuel Wyatt for Sir William Stanley, to replace an earlier courtyard House, half timbered with a stone wing and tower dating back to 1486 when the Stanley’s received a licence to crenellate. The earliest of Wyatt's Villa type houses, Hooton was a simple two storey structure on a rusticated basement. On the garden front was a central domed bow flanked by tripartate windows. In 1802 Repton produced a landscape scheme for Sir Thomas Stanley. In 1850 Hooton was bought by R.C Naylor. In 1854 Naylor employed James K Colling to remodel the house in Italianate style, including extensive extensions. Gardens were laid out by W.A. Nesfield. Colling also designed the Hooton Estate Church, St. Pauls, situated by the original Wyatt lodges and entrance.

The house was used as a military hospital in WWI and was demolished in 1936.

<2> 1994, Merseyside SMR, ref. 37783 (Book). SCH2189.

The (original) house was used to house a garrison in 1644 and work was undertaken to fortify it. The tower to the earlier house was said to be slender and of remarkable height
