Summary

On the 19/04/1998 a Gradiometer survey was undertaken in a field north of Waterless Brook. A number of waster sherds of medieval date have been recovered from this site. The survey indicated a strong magnetic anomaly in the area of the ceramic finds, probably a kiln and a number of weaker signals that may suggest the presence of archaeological deposits in the form of ditches and gullies.

Full Description

On the 19/04/1998 a Gradiometer survey was undertaken in a field north of Waterless Brook. The survey was undertaken at the invitation of Dr Sandy Cambell, who had on a previous occasion found a number of waster sherds of medieval date. The results of the survey indicated a strong magnetic anomaly in the area of the ceramic finds, probably a kiln and a number of weaker signals that may suggest the presence of archaeological deposits in the form of ditches and gullies. Other known kiln sites, one part excavated were pointed out to the surveyors, situated alongside the south side of a hedgerow, to the south of the brook (1). Desk based assessment suggests an earthwork indicating a former pond (possibly a marl pit MD Wilson pers comm) and soil marks indicating pits, in the vicinity of the kiln (2).(3)
