Description

On the afternoon of 19th April 2008, a gradiometer survey was carried out in a field north of Waterless Brook at Bruen Stapleford. The objective of the survey was two fold; to test geophysics intrumentation and to locate a suspected site of a medieval kiln. Anumber of waster sherds of medieval date had been found in this field by Dr Sandy Campbell of Upper Brereton Park Farm. The location of the suspected kiln site was not disclosed to the surveyors. The field was firstly scanned at 5m traverse intervals. Once area of suspected archaeology was identified, a 30 x 30m grid was placed to conduct a recorded detail survey. A strong magenitic anomly was recorded in the locality of the previous ceramics findspots and is strongly suspected to be a kiln site. Other subsoil distrubance in the vicinity, are believed to be reponses to archaeological remains and residues. These include several linear features, perhaps ditches, gullies and trackways.
