Summary

The place name 'Smithy Meadow' appears in the Adlington Tithe apportionment of 1848 to the north of Hope Green Farm. This suggests there was a blacksmiths workshop in the vicinity though geophysical survey and trial trenching in 1993 failed to reveal any direct evidence of a smithy. Tithe Awards are maps produced between 1838 and 1854 which record the names of owners, tenants, and values of property in each parish. They were created to establish taxation rates

Name Smithy Meadow appears in Adlington Tithe apportionment of 1848 (field 678), to the north of Hope Green Farm.

Geophysical survey was undertaken in the field to the north of Hope Green Farm listed as 'Smithy Meadow' on the 1848 Tithe map in 1993. Magnetic anomalies were revealed and two trial trenches were excavated to explore these further. Whilst no direct evidence of a smithy was found, trench 9 did produce a large fragment of cast iron.
