Name Smithy Meadow appears in Adlington Tithe apportionment of 1848 (field 678), to the north of Hope Green Farm.

Geophysical survey was undertaken in the field to the north of Hope Green Farm listed as 'Smithy Meadow' on the 1848 Tithe map in 1993. Magnetic anomalies were revealed and two trial trenches were excavated to explore these further. Whilst no direct evidence of a smithy was found, trench 9 did produce a large fragment of cast iron.
