The name 'Smithy Meadow' appears on the Adlington Tithe apportionment of 1848 and also appears on the present OS map as 'Smithymeadow Pits'. This suggests a Blacksmiths workshop once existed in the locality. The name 'Smithy Meadow' appears on the AdlingtonTithe apportionment of 1848 (field 618).

'Smithymeadow' placename on tithe map, to the north of Adlington, indicating the presence of blacksmiths in the locality in the post medieval period. Current field name 'Smithymeadow Pits'.
