Full Description
<1> Earthworks Archaeological Services, 1999, Internal Alterations and Extensions at The Former National Westminster Bank, 2 Swan Bank, Congleton, Cheshire., R2292 (Client Report). SCH4169.
Watching brief on former Natwest Bank site revealed 18th and 19th century deposits. A stone wall foundation or footing 600mm wide and 3.80m long of large grey sandstone blocks, roughly dressed along NE face and 2 brick built rectangular structures each c.1.10m long x c.1.50m wide. Fill of structure consisted of loose black ash, cinders, brick fragments and rounded stones, pot sherds and clay tobacco pipe fragments. These features were c.1m below present ground level. No ground disturbance below level of these features and so it is possible that deposits and features pre-dating the 18th century lie protected at lower levels.
