Summary

The Close, Church Road. House, 17th century with later 19th century wing to north and other additions and alterations in 17th century style. Red-brown brick with false timber-framed gables. Tile roof and ridges. Two-storey, asymmetrical facade with three gables, one slightly projecting to form L plan. Partly exposed upper cruck in first floor room. Cruck - a beam used in timber framing. Two curved timbers that are cut from the same tree are used to support a roof from floor to apex.

Full Description

The Close, Church Road. House, C17 with later C19 wing to north and other additions and alterations in C17 style. Red-brown brick with false timber-framed gables. Tile roof and ridges. Two-storey, asymmetrical facade with three gables, one slightly projecting to form L plan. Rectangular collared brick flues set diagonally from one to two per stack. First floor dentillated band. Slightly projecting timber casements. Arched brick head to doorway. Three storey brick water tower integral to building at rear. Interior: sandstone chimney stack with inglenooks with panelling brought from Carden Hall and moulded brackets to beam in kitchen. Partly exposed upper cruck in first floor room.
