Full Description
Wich House Field, named on Rope Township Tithe Map (1). Site visit by George Twigg. Possible triangular shaped man-made excavation in middle of which is a boggy hole filled with bumps and hollows. Beside bog are two linear earth mounds and a variety of bumps and hollows. On higher ground nearby is a dry shallow hollow. Given proximity to find spot of Roman salt pans in Shavington (RN: 2400/0/3) 1km away. Twigg suggests this Rope site may be Roman. The place name 'Wich House Field' suggest this was salt related in more recent times (2). Adjacent field names include 'Pit Field' and 'Barn Field' (3).
