Monument record 545/1 - Nether or Lower Hall of Stretton

Please read our .

Summary

Site of a medieval moat and manor house. Records suggest that 'the materials of the demolished, moated Manor House, known as the Nether or Lower Hall of Stretton' were used to build Stretton Hall in around 1664. Moated Sites are characterised by a waterlogged ditch that encloses a platform of land where buildings were built though they were also used for horticulture e.g. orchards. They were most popular in medieval times though not necessarily for the defensive advantages of being on an island as they were also seen as a sign of prestige. There are approximately 6000 across England with over 200 moated sites in Cheshire alone.

Lower Hall. The area around is a mixture of farm buildings and pasture, and was perambulated although nothing resembling a moat was seen. Mrs Jones, the present owner, although only recently moved to the Farm is local and can remember a pond near the house about 25-30 years ago which was claimed as a moat; this has since been filled in. Mr and Mrs Derbyshire of Tanyard Farm, Lower Stretton, confirmed that there used to be a moat around Lower Hall but that it was filled in 20-30 years ago. [HMJ 01/06/1988].
