Full Description
Scheduled section of Roman road between Appleton and Stretton. Stackyard of School Farm. Excavated by Lymm & District History Society in 1968 when tracing the line of the road from the Lymm intersection of the M6 westwards. Minimum road width of 33ft and probably wider, with a surface of 3-4 inches of gravel underlain by upto 9 inches of sub-angular stones set in soft sand. Shoulder of larger stones (1) (2). Area now covered by car park for village hall, but the line of the ditch is still visible to the SW of the scheduled area and the agger can be seen continuing under the farm buildings. The road surface was seen in road works and in the excavation by the Lymm Society and later when the car park surface was laid down (3).
