Summary

In 1931 a small mound in a garden in Grappenhall produced a small cinerary urn and a saddle quern. In 1933 a sewer trench was dug between manholes in Chester Road and Euclid Avenue, the course of this trench lay through the centre of this mound. It was excavated in March 1933 and revealed a cairn of sandstone 36ft in diam, with a kerb of large flat slabs tilted inwards. In the centre was a cist, 4ft long a 18ins wide lined with flat stones, but no evidence of a burial (Though the urn found by 1931could have come from here). Close by was a cremation area with human remains and fragments of 2 lozenge shaped arrowheads, flint scrapers and flakes. Secondary cremation burials without urns were found near the crown of the mound. On the outer margin of the mound a stone 'muller' or pestle and fragments of a decorated middle Bronze Age food vessel were found. To the south and east of the mound was a cemetery of numerous urnless cremation burials and 3 large cinerary urns. A perforated bone pin and saddle quern were also found.
