Full Description

In deeds of the Legh family dated 1465 three mentions are made of a fountain called 'Hallumswalle'.Uncertain whether the spelling should be 'Hallumswalle' or 'Hallunswalle',but if the latter it may be a corruption of Helenswell - a fountain or well dedicated to St Helena. It gave its name to a place known as Running Pump, where until 1849 there was an iron conduit & a perpetual stream of spring water(1). 'The goodly hall called Hallum's Wall' must have occupied the site of the RC presbytery between Church St & Buttermarket St.It was later called the Swan. At junction of Church St & Mersey St was a spring called Fons Scaturiens in 1465.Here there stood the Running Pump, a perpetual spring.(2).Hallumslane or Hallus Lane ran for a short distance out of Church St to the S & W, rejoining it at its junction with Heathside(3). Taylor equates 'le Hallumswalle' with St Elphin's well(4).Site occupied by modern premises(5).
