Description

Buttermarket Street is located close to Church Street in the west of the town centre. It marks the beginning of the town centre and is visually dominated by St. Mary’s Church and tower and cotains several attractive Georgian buildings. The area has important townscape qualities. Approaching from the east the staggered irregular building line creates a feeling of enclosure and a funelling effect and the trees on the right provide a foil to the strong vertical element of St. Mary’s tower. The curved form of the street is also important, acting as an enclosing element and terminating the view from the east. From the west there is a particularly fine view of St. Elphin’s Church spire. To the west the view is terminated by new buildings and a few older remaining buildings, including the Friends Meeting House and its peaceful and private grounds at the junction with Academy Street.
