Full Description

Inn, seventeenth century, altered. Oak small-framed, brick-nogged, with extensions in brick and sandstone; grey slate roof. Two storeys, T-shaped. The leg of the T has small-frame on 1.5 metre brick plinth, with lean-to extension of brick and stone, probably eighteenth century, to rear. To the front are two small-pane casements to each storey and a lobby-entrance under a (probably early twentieth century) lean-to porch on brackets. The head of the T, probably originally stabling, but converted to licensed and living accommodation, is of brick with small-pane casements with two boarded loading-doors in gable to former hayloft and two blocked loophole vents in side wall. The interior is altered.

On the northern gable end is the following text comprising letters attached to the timber framing: In the year 923 King Edward the Elder founded a cyty here and called it Thelwall.
