Full Description
Excavations by J.H.Williams on Brewery site, partly overlapping area excavated by May 1895-1905. Three phases of occupation in 2nd century AD, characterised by timber structures associated with industrial activity. 1966 area - Aisled workshop with bowl smithing furnace & enclosed area with lean-to sheds, building with courtyard associated with bowl furnaces & clay floored timber structures. 1967 area - Timber aisled building, slots, postholes & pits. 1969 area - 3 phases of timber buildings & 4 trenches to test May defences but no evidence. Finds of slag, 22 coins, potsherds of samian, black burnished & local fabrics, Wilderspool, Mancetter-Hartshill, Holt & West Midland fabric mortaria, iron objects, stone objects, brooches, lead weight,glass & a clay figurine (1)(2)(3).
