Summary

A Tumulus is marked at this location on the Ordnance Survey map. There is no trace of earthworks in the area. The ground is much disturbed and partly covered by a large slag-tip. Tumulus is a broad term for an artificial mound such as a round barrow. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.
