Summary

A large number of Roman objects were reported from Wilderspool area in 1770, during the construction of the Bridgewater Canal. The finds were made near Lumb Brook and a little museum was established at a nearby house. The finds (now dispersed) may have related the a possible junction of Roman roads at this point.

Large number of Roman objects reported from Wilderspool area in 1770, during the construction of the Bridgewater Canal.Finds made near Lumb Brook & formed in a little museum at Mr Ireland's house nearby.Finds may relate to a hypothetical junction of Roman roads at this point.Finds later dispersed (1).No details of finds.OS gives grid ref SJ 62218608 at the junction of the Bridgewater Canal with Lumb Brook (2).Thompson fig 16 shows a location which gives grid ref c.SJ 613867 (3).
