Full Description
1829 - 2 inhumation burials,each in a cist of apparently burnt stone.Amongst the bones were two small urns containing ashes & charcoal. Probably found in the grounds of Appleton Hall c.11yds E.of King Street Roman Road, by Matthew Lyon (1). Stones of the cist were water worn & tool marked.The bodies lay on sand 16ins below the surface & were 2 feet apart.A few urns were found, not far from the cists, containing bones, ashes & charcoal.The urns measured c.4 x 3ins & one had a 'pinched pattern'.Wrongly identified as Roman (2).Probably Bronze Age. Burials described as Romano-British by Thompson Watkin (3). Incense cup or small urn, 3.5ins high, of plain type, found with another in 1829 with burnt bones, charcoal & flints (4). 'Pygmy cup' from Stretton (5). Ornamented urn is displayed in Warrington Museum-donated by Dr Kendrick 1857. Museum also has human remains & charcoal fron the site (6). c.1848 - A third burial was found further N.than previous find on the W.of the Roman road.Illustration (1).
