A grade II* listed public house. This timber framed building was originally built in the late sixteenth century, but was significantly altered in the nineteenth century.

Full Description

Built 1561, altered and extended in the nineteenth century. Market Place front is of black and white work (more black than white) on a red sandstone base, with two gables of small patterns, and two rows of continuous small-paned windows. Passage at left (adjoining No 13) has timber beams. Gable of old wing visible, but a brick extension has been built in front of it along Market Street.

The original (probably sixteenth century) wing was extended and re-fronted in nineteenth century, brick, two storeys. Round-arched entrance with panelled wood pilasters and barley sheaf in plastered relief in the tympanum. Three sash windows on ground floor and two above, irregularly spaced, some with glazing bars replaced. Top cornice, with two very small windows, now blocked, in attic.

Later sixteenth century gabled ‘black and white’ building. Three storeys, two gables to Market Place, timber framed, plaster and brick, stone base, first floor overhang. Restored barge boards and gables covered with painted boarding. [Hopper, M. 12/07/1960].

The present name is ‘Ye Olde Barley Mow’. All but the front of the building…has been extensively altered in recent years. [Lewis. R, Field Inspector. 05/10/1960]
