A watching brief during the construction of the Middlewich bypass in 1995 identified the remains of a building immediately to the south-west of the scheduled moated site at Kinderton Hall Farm (753/1/1). Three linear features were interpreted as beam slots on the north, east and west sides of a rectangular building, circa 14m long by at least 3m wide. One of the beam slots produced pottery of late 14th/15th century date. A gully, interpreted as a boundary ditch, also produced pottery of late 14th/15th century date. Two further beam slots were identified, the fill of one of which contained a sherd of 17th century pottery. It is thought that these could represent a re-build of the eastern end of the earlier structure. Beneath the plough soil there was a demolition layer indicating a structure of wattle and daub walls, clay floors and a tiled roof. The medieval structure may have formed part of the village of Kinderton, recorded in Domesday.
