Description

Archaeological watching brief undertaken in June 1995 during groundworks associated with the construction of Middlewich By-pass close to the site a scheduled moated site at Kinderton Hall Farm, Middlewich. The partial remains of a timber structure, existing as beam slots, was positively identified and dated by pottery to the late fourteenth or fifteenth century. It was probably rectangular in plan and at least 14m long and more than 3m wide. A second period of activity is represented by two further beam slots, one containing a sherd of seventeenth century pottery. These possibly represent a re-build of the eastern end of the earlier property. This structure may have formed part of the village of Kinderton, a settlement included in the Domesday survey of 1086AD but surviving today only in the name of Kinderton Hall Farm. (1)
