Summary

Gallowsclough Cob round barrow. It was excavated in the 1960's and a primary cremation burial of a young adult male was uncovered. There were no traces of an urn or grave goods. A secondary burial of an adult skeleton was also found but it was fragmentary, presumably lost by both natural erosion and ploughing. It is a Scheduled Monument. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

Gallowsclough Cob round barrow. Excavated in 1960 by James Forde-Johnston. The barrow was defined by a kerb of turves & measured 45ft 6ins E-W & 43ft N-S. No evidence of a ditch. 7ft SSW of the centre of the barrow was a primary cremation burial of a young adult male. No urn nor grave goods. In the top of the barrow was an incomplete secondary burial consisting of various parts of a adult skeleton. It was probably partly lost by both natural erosion & ploughing (1). In 1976 OS recorded barrow 24m diam & 1m high (2). Barrow lies c.3/4m N from hedge of Gallowsclough Lane in ploughed field on hilltop contour. Shows up as clay & pebble spread on soil surface. Up to 1m high & approx 15m in diam (3). Oval earthen mound 0.8m high and 30m x 23m (5).
