Monument record 690/1 - Hefferston Grange

Please read our .

Summary

The present Hefferston Grange is on the site of a former Grange of Vale Royal Abbey. It is likely that the medieval building that once stood here was moated. It is first mentioned in the 13th century and a 14th century document records "'Le Henhous, le Munkesberne, le Shephous' (hen- house, monk's barn, sheep-house). 18th and 20th century landscaping suggest that little of the medieval grange is likely to survive. A Grange is an area of monastic land that lies outside the Abbey's main land holdings. They were usually farms and were run by the laymen of the monastic order or by hired labour.

Full Description

<1> Cheshire County Council, 1974, County Treasures Record, 4/A.153 (Index). SCH1000.

Hefferston Grange - a former Grange of Vale Royal Abbey. Probably also formerly moated. A hollow feature, possibly a former road, runs north-east from the Grange and extends for approximately 300m.

First mentioned 1272-90. 'Le Henhous, le Munkesberne, le Shephous' (hen- house, monk's barn, sheep-house) were mentioned in 1395.

<3> County Historic Environment Record, 1973-1985, Cheshire Archaeological Bulletin, No.5, p.36-39 (Journal/Periodical). SCH565.

Moat may have been the largest in the county, with sides 400ft long. Surface remains consisted of 2 water-filled depressions to the S of the later mansionand two large water-filled depressions to the north, which are probably fishponds. The hollow way is the former route of the A49 Warrington Road, which was diverted when the house was refurbished in the eighteenth century.

<5> Cheshire Historic Environment Record, 1990-1992, MPP Scoring Form, Robinson K D, 22/03/1990 (Unpublished Document). SCH2222.

Eighteenth and twentieth century landscaping suggest that little of the medieval grange is likely to survive, as did the results of six excavation trenches dug in in the 1970's.
