Summary

A Saxon coin hoard was found while construction work was being carried out in August 1914 on Water Tower St., c 1m south of north wall of city, opposite the eastern angle of Pemberton's Parlour. Comprised of over 120 silver coins, it is though to have been deposited about 980.

Full Description

A Saxon coin hoard was found while construction work was being carried out in August 1914 on Water Tower St., c 1m south of north wall of city, opposite the eastern angle of Pemberton's Parlour (1, 2). The hoard was buried c 1 - 1.5m below the road and comprised of 122 silver pennies, including 24 of Edgar, 52 of Edward II and 33 of Etheired II (suggesting the hoard was deposited c 980) (2). It is thought that other coins had been found, but were dispersed at the time of the discovery (1).
