Full Description
Bronze crescent shaped tile or brick stamp with embossed Trajanic style lettering in reverse. The back has the remains of a small knob or short handle. Identified by the British Museum as genuinely Roman, but unlikely to have been associated with Britain. It was probably acquired by a menber of the Cholmondeley family who went on a grand tour of Europe in the 18th or 19th century (1). Inscribed 'PRIMIGENI VOL VIOL', which may mean (manu) Primigeni(i), Vol(umnii) Viol(entis) (liberti) - 'by the hand of Primigenius freedman of Voluminius Violens' (2).
