Monument record 10263 - Post medieval layer at the SE Angle of the Roman fortress

Please read our .

Summary

Archaeological investigations at the south east angle of the Roman fortress in 1908 encountered evidence of medieval and post medieval infilling of the Roman eastern defensive ditch. Excavations at No 12 St John Street in 1908 encountered large quantities of medieval and post medieval material from the fill of the Roman defensive ditch. The evidence included a substantial layer approximately 1.3m thick containing animal bone, pottery from the 14th-17th century, leather, brick and rock etc. It was suggested by Newstead that the quantity of leather, bark and wood fragments may indicate the presence of a tannery nearby.

Bark and small fragments of wood may have been the waste from a local tannery (1).
