Summary

High Billinge round barrow is a Scheduled Monument. It is 30 metres across and about 2 metres high. There are no visible remains of a ditch and there are trees on the top. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

High Billinge Tumulus. Round barrow 30m in diam & 1.8m high. No visible remains of a ditch. Surmounted by trees (1).

30m diam x c.2m high. Prominent mound on exposed hilltop with many tall sycamore trees. Some recent planting around barrow of mixed evergreen & beech saplings. Remains of fencing on top and below mound on SW and also on N (2).

Bowl barrow located on the summit of a low hillock W of High Billinge House. Consists of an oval mound of earth up to 2m high and measuring 35m N-S by 24m E-W (3).

Utkinton- Round Earthern Mound; diameter 32m, height 4.4m; tree and turf covered. (4)
