Summary

The Motte (an artificial hill constructed to hold a castle) at Castle Cob was originally thought to be a prehistoric burial mound. It has steep sides and a flat top but no trace of a ditch or bailey (enclosed settlement at the foot of a motte) It is 23 metres in diameter and 2.8 metres high. It is covered in trees with rough grass and ferns. It is a Scheduled Monument. This type of fortified Castle was introduced into Britain by the Normans. Is one of several castles in Cheshire that were constructed in the medieval period to defend the rich agricultural resources of Cheshire from raids.

Full Description

Mound at Castle Cob, 66ft in diameter, originally interpreted as a barrow [see CSMR: 4167]. 'It has been opened & was found to contain nothing but a quantity of black soil' (1). Very large barrow 25yds in diam x 3yds high. Could be a motte with steep sides & a flat top, but no traces of a ditch or bailey. Surmounted by a water tank (2). Artificial mound 2.7m high with steep sides & a flat top. Does not look like a barrow or a motte & its nature could not be deduced (3). Barrow set on upper slopes of hill with commanding views all round. Very large, c.23m diam x 3m high, with flat top 6m across. Steps onto mound on SW slope, upto ruined summerhouse and water tank. Mound covered in trees with rough grass and ferns, surrounded by hedge with stone revetment (4). Scheduled as a motte - earthen mound 19m diam & upto 2.8m high. Flat top measures c.6m diam (6).
