Monument record 719/0/11 - Condate - Possible Brine Kiln

Please read our .

Summary

An excavation in 1967 in the gardens of demolished houses before redevelopment, revealed a 1st century brine kiln similar to that found at Middlewich in 1960. The brine springs of Cheshire are known to have been worked in Roman times. The discovery of lead salt pans with roman inscriptions reveals that the Romans were using the open pan method of salt production. This was used in Cheshire until the 1980’s. Brine is heated in a shallow pan over low temperatures of large salt crystals or high for fine salt.

Excavations (in 1967) before redevelopment in the gardens of demolished houses at Northwich revealed a Brine Kiln cut into the natural marl, probably dating from the first century. The work was carried out by the Mid-Cheshire College of Further Education and directed by Mr J.B Curzon. (Interim report in CBA Group 5 'Archaeological Newsletter' no. 10, September 1967, p.5)
