Full Description

A hoard of 25 silver groats of Edward III (1312-1377) were found by workmen following the demolition of six old cottages on Upper Northgate Street. The cottages were numbered 45-55 and were located north of the Congregational Chapel. The vessel containing the coins was found under the tiled floor of one of the cottages (probably No.49), 0.3m below the surface, 2.75m from the front door of the cottage and 16.47m north of the base of the church. Only the base section of hoard pot survives - a crudely made bottle-shaped vessel, wheel thrown, with a waisted foot and slightly concave base. Hard pink to buff coloured fabric with numerous grits. There were originally 25 coins, all of them struck in London and bearing the motto on the reverse 'I have made God my help' (1). Nine coins are held by the Grosvenor, the remainder are dispersed, probably in private ownership. Deposition of hoard c.1361 (2).
