Summary

Alvanley Hall Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed building. It was built in the 17th century but has a large early medieval column in the undercroft. The walls of the farmhouse are roughly coursed red sandstone rubble with later brickwork and a low-pitched grey slate roof. Little can be traced of the 15th century Alvanley Hall which must have stood closeby and is recorded as having the remains of a moat.

Full Description

Alvanley Hall Farmhouse. 17th century, with large early medieval column in undercroft. Roughly coursed red sandstone rubble with later brickwork, low-pitched grey slate roof. L-shaped with two bays and cross gable on west side, three bays on east side, all of stone. One bay south extension of brick. Interior: Principal feature is a massive round undercroft column on a hollow-sided octagonal base (1). Full architectural description (1) and (2). Of Alvanley Hall, part or the whole of which was of stone in the 15th century, very little can be traced (1816) in the walls of the farm which occupies its site (3). The hall 'stands on the hill at the end of a straight drive, with remains of what was probably a moat, and with roomy barns & stables down below' (4).
