Summary

Site of medieval gibbet (gallows) which has in the past been mistaken for burial mound. Between 1837 and 1930 the mound was robbed of the sand it contained and a silver bodkin ( needle) was found. It is still visible as semi-circular ring.

Full Description

Site of medieval gibbet. Mistaken for burial mound. Tumulus composed of light soil or sand which is sharply defined from local soil (1). Silver bodkin found in 1842 (2). Land said to have been in same family since 1837. Between 1837 & 1930 mound robbed of the sand it contained. Owner aware of find of silver bodkin & that the mound was said to have been the site of a gallows. Mound still visible as semi-circular ring. Original diam c.65m. Ground levelled, but sand still visible. Little doubt that the mound was a sand cap & not a barrow (3). Mound diameter 6m, height 0.5m, crossed by field boundary. Included in list of round barrows (4).
