Summary

Scheduled Monument and Grade II listed Stone cross base. It is a square cross-base and octagonal shaft on stepped plinth. There are moulded beasts at the corners of the plinth. It dates from the 15th century. Set on top of the shaft is a modern wooden cross. Standing Crosses are usually of stone and date from the medieval period, mid 10th to mid 16th centuries AD. They served a variety of purposes from places of prayer and pilgrimage to places of public proclamation. At one time there were over 12,000 of these crosses throughout Britian but many were destroyed during the reformation. There are now less than 2000 crosses remaining, many incomplete.

Full Description

Cross-base in Churchyard of St James. 15th or 16th century. Sandstone ashlar. Square cross-base and octagonal shaft on stepped plinth. Plinth of two steps with square base, dying via off-set to faceted base with moulded beasts at corners. Diagonally set cross-base and octagonal shaft. 20th century circular cross set above this (1). Base & a section of the shaft on 3 steps. 1st step is flush with ground level & is 3m sq. 2nd step is of dressed sandstone blocks & is 2.35m sq & is 0.28m high. 3rd step, also of dressed stones is 1.75m sq & 0.3m high. Block base is of finely carved sandstone & is 1.05m sq & 0.75m high. Base is square rising to octagonal with grotesque beasts at each shoulder. Shaft is octagonal & a section 0.85m long survives. Cross is 15th century & is listed grade II. Set on top of the shaft & secured with iron bands is a modern wooden cross (2).
