Summary

A round barrow consisting of a stone cairn covered by a 15ft thick layer of earth. In the centre, on a layer of stones were cremated human bones and teeth and a flint saw. Fragments of two pottery urns were also recovered from this site when it was quarried out to 4metres below the former ground level. The site now part of a modern cemetery. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

A round barrow, situated behind Mount Pleasant, Prestbury Road. Site consisted of a cairn 3ft high x 12ft diam, covered by a 15ft thick layer of earth. In the centre, on a layer of stones were calcined human bones and teeth and a flint saw, 4.5 ins long x 1 inch wide, with a fine serrated edge (1). Fragments of 2 urns, one large & the other small, were obtained by Dr W H Clarke from the workmen who were removing this tumulus (2). No trace of barrow remains. Site has been quarried out to 4m below former ground level (3). Site now part of a modern cemetery (4).
