Summary

A late 3rd century Romano-British coin hoard of 2,450 antoniniani. They were buried in an earthernware jar of which only the base remains and were found during ploughing near Agden Brook in 1957. An Antoninianus was a coin worth two denarii. They were the same size as a denarius(roman silver coin) but the portrait of the emperor was wearing a radiate crown. They were generally of a very low silver content or bronze with a silver coating. The coins are nearly all bronze, although a few are apparently of silver bronze alloy and some show traces of an original silver coating. They range from Valerian I (253-60) to Probus (276-82), the majority being of Tetricus I (271-273) and Victorinus (269-271). The dates of the coins suggest it was hidden soon after AD 280. The total includes local copies of official versions, known as barborous radiates and minimi.

Full Description

<1> n/a, 1958, Miscellanea, p.72-73 (Article in Journal). SCH5754.

A hoard of nearly 2,500 Roman coins, antoniniani, at Woolstencroft Farm, Agden. They were unearthed during ploughing and; had originally been buried in an earthenware jar; unfortunately, the rim had already been destroyed, perhaps by earlier ploughing, and only the bottom portion, containing the coins, had survived. The actual find-spot was the southern end of a rectangular spur overlooking the Agden Brook, an easily recognizable natural feature. The coins are nearly all of bronze, though a few are apparently of silver-bronze alloy and one or two show traces of an original silver coating; they were all in a highly corroded condition. The composition is fairly normal for Romano-British coin hoards of the late third century, and includes local copies (barbarous radiates and minimi). The earliest coins are of the Emperor Valerian and latest coins are of the Emperor Probus and it is probable that the hoard was deposited around A.D. 280.
