A hoard of nearly 2,500 Roman coins, antoniniani, at Woolstencroft Farm, Agden. They were unearthed during ploughing and; had originally been buried in an earthenware jar; unfortunately, the rim had already been destroyed, perhaps by earlier ploughing, and only the bottom portion, containing the coins, had survived. The actual find-spot was the southern end of a rectangular spur overlooking the Agden Brook, an easily recognizable natural feature. The coins are nearly all of bronze, though a few are apparently of silver-bronze alloy and one or two show traces of an original silver coating; they were all in a highly corroded condition. The composition is fairly normal for Romano-British coin hoards of the late third century, and includes local copies (barbarous radiates and minimi). The earliest coins are of the Emperor Valerian and latest coins are of the Emperor Probus and it is probable that the hoard was deposited around A.D. 280.
