Please read our .

Summary

A brick-lined well, c.1.20m in diameter, discovered during renovation of The Old Hall. Site stratigraphy implied a date for its construction somewhere between c.1720 and c.1800, although it could be an older feature refurbished during the eighteenth century. The brick lining was only evident for the top half of the well. The depth to the water level within the well was measured to be approximately 18m.

Full Description

Whilst surveying sites in Nether Alderley, including the Old Hall (SMR 1404/2/1) builders showed MARS field workers a well they had discovered during renovation. Apparently 20 metres deep approximately, with water for a third of this, it appeared in good condition and well made. Date uncertain, though SMR records show habitation pre 1700. Present work at the site will cover the well (presumably with some form of cap). The well lies to the north of the house, slightly to the left of the bridge over the moat on a small 'patio' abutting the NW corner of the house.

The well was very similar in structure and character to the well at Little Moreton Hall, near Congleton.
