Full Description
Several medieval pits were recorded during investigations at Bridge Street east on the site of the Roman fortress baths in 1863. One was an irregular square shape and occupied one of the rooms on the south side of the basilica; one was square and was situated between the rows of pillars in the basilica; the third pit was circular and located close to a pillar in the north row. These pits contained a large quantity of animal matter, burnt wood and fragments of medieval pottery. They were probably medieval cess pits. (1)
