Summary

There are reports from the nineteenth century of a complex of earthworks in this area which could be the remains of a now abandoned settlement or earlier field systems or stock enclosures. As yet, none of these features have been conclusively located by modern researchers.

Full Description

<1> Sainter J D, 1878, Scientific Rambles Round Macclesfield, p.36 (Book). SCH2964.

“…In the adjoining field southwards there is to be seen the remains of some small stone circles and square enclosures, six feet in diameter, of which, when dug into, the surface soil was black for eighteen inches in depth, succeeded by red soil containing a few rough pieces of gritstone…”

<2> Ordnance Survey, 1870-1982, Ordnance Survey Archaeological Record Card, SJ96 NE 6 (Index). SCH2487.

The area is naturally uneven and there has been some minor quarrying. No trace was found of the features described by Sainter (see 1), except the stone circle (see CHER 1525). [Rigg J, 29/04/1964].

<3> Rowley G 1982, 1982, Macclesfield in Prehistory, p.24 (Book). SCH2062.

Sainter (see 1) describes the remains near Clulow Cross. These may well have been the remains of dwellings of some sort, or cattle pens, or both together. If they were indeed the remnants of huts, the 'black earth' which Sainter mentions was probably accumulated occupation debris, the very depth of which (forty-five centimetres) conjures up a vivid picture of what may often have been the fairly pungent atmosphere of such an interior.

<4> Longley D, 1977-1978, Longley Archive, no.123 (Paper Archive). SCH2005.

Of two irregular mounds reported by Sainter (see 1), no trace was found, but in the same field there is a shallow mound which is probably natural. [PW & LH, 20/10/1977].
