Monument record 1568 - Possible Bronze Age round barrow

Please read our .

Summary

A possible round barrow has been recorded at this location. It was sectioned in 1906, but produced no finds. Locals said mound was formed by spoil from emptying a nearby pond. Recent survey did not find trace of the barrow, it has presumably been destroyed by forestry. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

A round barrow situated 'in a field or two further on, beyond the old quarry' from the brickworks mound (RN:1571/1) (1). OS describe the site as an artificial mound of soft earth, situated in an area where there are considerable excavations. It is 11m diam x 1.2m high & is slightly irregular. A doubtful round barrow (2). VCH notes that the mound was sectioned in 1906, but produced no finds. Described in 1909 as 'a regular cone'... resembling a tumulus. Central trench with brown earth overlying black peat indicating a relatively modern date. Locals said mound was formed by spoil from emptying a nearby pond (3). 1972 SW side of mound had been completely removed (4). Mound is 12m diam x 0. 8m high (5). Mound not found in 1988 (6). Site of monument marked on OS 1: 10,000 map, however this area was found to be a recent clearing in a coniferous plantation. No trace of the barrow could be seen and has presumably been destroyed by forestry (7).
