Good condition on opposite side of road to PPT D203. Very likely original series of milestones with the cast iron series replacing them later. Only this one remaining. An interesting feature is the mileage from Buxton, appears to be a 6 altered to an 8 or vice-versa. This however differs from PPT D203 which states Buxton 7 miles, although distances to Congleton are same. Photo in Peak Park SMR - film no. 36; 26/27.

Milestone on the south side of the 1790 Buxton to Congleton Turnpike Road thought to be the only original milestone left on this road. On the northern face of the milestone on the south side of the road is inscribed 'To Congleton 9 Miles Buxton 8'. It appears from physical alterations to the inscription that the milestone originally said that it was 6 miles to Buxton and that the distance was changed later. The milestone is created from a sandstone flag and it has a semi-circular arched top.

During the 19th century part of the course of the Buxton to Congleton Turnpike was rerouted to avoid a steep section of the road between Buxton and the Derbyshire/Cheshire border. This accounts for the discrepancy in distance between the milestone and the adjacent milepost (CHER 2471/2/3).
