Northern side of A54 (Buxton - Congleton road) near Heild Rocks. Triangular section, painted white, dated 1896. Inscribed on top: Cheshire County Council 1896; on left side: Buxton 7 miles; on right side: Congleton 9 miles. Photo in Peak Park SMR - film ref no. 36; 25.

On the north side of the road is a cast iron milepost that dates from 1896. The cast iron milepost to the north of the road is triangular in section, although it has no back to the north. On the south-western face of the post is written 'Buxton 7 miles'; on the south-eastern face it says 'Congleton 9 miles'; on the top of the post it says 'Cheshire County Council 1896'.

During the 19th century part of the course of the Buxton to Congleton Turnpike was rerouted to avoid a steep section of the road between Buxton and the Derbyshire/Cheshire border. This accounts for the discrepancy in distance between the milepost and the adjacent milestone (CHER 2471/2/4).
