Full Description
Good condition milestone 8 yds NE of old turnpike across moor, just NW of `Cat and Fiddle'. Road now by-passed by large bend in road. Old road appears to have original surface. Illustration & photo in PP SMR - film no.36; 30-31 (1). Re-erected after war in 1962 by Mr Holland, roadman and 1st Chapel scouts. Milestone 164 to London (2). Milestone c.1750. Triangular sectioned ashlar sandstone block with a shaped top. NW face reads 'To Macclesfield 6 miles', S face reads 'To London 164 miles'. Alongside a surviving stretch of the original turnpike, isolated in a loop of 1821 turnpike. One of a group of milestones on old Macc-Buxton turnpike of 1750. 2 others in Macc Forest (RN:2471/1/3 & 1/7) (3).
