Description
SJ 97 SE MACCLESFIELD FOREST C.P. BUXTON ROAD (North Side)
5/96 Milestone 140m north of milespost at SJ 9991 7211.
II
Milestone: c1750. Triangular sectioned ashlar sandstone block with a shaped top. North-west face reads To Macclesfield 6 miles and south face reads To London 164 miles.
This stone is alongside a surviving stretch of the original turnpike isolated in a loop of the new turnpike of 1821. This stone is unerased probably because it did not advertise the shorter distance of the old road to travellers on the new.
