Monument record 1541 - Mound near the farmhouse towards Leather's Smithy

Please read our .

Summary

A possible round barrow. Reported by Sainter in his 19th century "Scientific Rambles around Macclesfield"as a large conical mound, near the farmhouse towards Leather's Smithy. Recent survey suggests that this is a large natural mound, or it may be spoil heap associated with the construction of nearby reservoirs. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.
